You’ve heard of a new game called Arena of Valor and you decided to download it to see what the hype is all about. However, it is your first time playing a MOBA and this game is your first introduction to this genre. Where do you begin? Let us first understand what a MOBA is exactly. MOBA is a short term for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena which is a genre popularized by PC games like League of Legends and Dota. The first real MOBA experience on mobile was Vainglory which was developed by Super Evil Megacorp. Now that we have a brief background about the MOBA Genre we can proceed.
Arena of Valor brings a 5vs5 experience where you and your team work closely together to destroy the enemy towers in order to get to the enemy Core. The objective of the game is to destroy the enemy Core in order to win the game. You will find 3 main lanes on the map, each lane has 6 towers. 3 towers belong to your team which you will need to protect and the other 3 towers belong to the enemy which you will need to take down. You will struggle in destroying the enemy towers because the enemy Heroes will be defending them. There will also be Minions automatically spawning via your lanes and the enemy lanes. Eliminate all enemy minions and do your best to protect yours.
Since your team is composed of 5 players, it would be an advantage if you build a strategic team. There are 6 classes to which heroes belong to: Tank, Warrior, Assassin, Mage, Marksman, and Support. Some heroes belong to more than one category. The Hero Cresht, for example, is a Tank/Support. Tanks are important in Arena of Valor because a hero belonging to this category can absorb a lot of damage and can function as a protective shield for other team heroes. Support heroes also play an important role in each game such as creating shield for the team or provide healing abilities to nearby allies. So we see that having a diverse combination of heroes from different classes can increase the chances of winning.
You want to make sure that each lane is protected by one of your ally heroes so your towers don’t get destroyed. Having players with the roles of Laners, Junglers, and Roamers is Important. The Laner’s role is to protect each lane by pushing enemy minions out and keeping the towers safe. The Jungler’s main role is to support lanes and gank enemy heroes without them seeing you coming. In order to be able to support lanes, Junglers need to level up fast by killing jungle monsters. The Roamer’s role is to switch between lane and jungle to provide support for the Laner and Jungler nearby. Arena of Valor is a strategic game and teamwork is very important if you want to come out as the victor.
Each hero comes with special abilities that can contribute to the team’s power. To enhance those abilities, you can buy items from the store and create a good build that matches your hero’s abilities. You might not perform well with all heroes so we highly suggest that you try different heroes via Hero Trial and learn more about their abilities to see which hero you can best utilize. To unlock heroes you can also partake in the Road to Glory Event. By finishing 3 matches a day in this event grants you a hero.
Finally, these are main basics for Arena of Valor if you are a beginner. Of course, the game gets more complicated as you play more since hero stats come into play, the different kinds of builds that you can have on a hero, and tactical strategies that you can use to win. One of the most important rules in any MOBA is to avoid getting killed. If you do get killed you will render your team weaker, your killer would become stronger, and while your team has a man down the enemy might make a strong push towards your base. For that, you need to be cautious and never get greedy. If you see an enemy on the brink of death, do not make a risky move to kill him. Only kill him when you know you are in a safe zone or have support nearby. Good luck on the battlefield.
