League of Legends – A Mobile Version May Be In The Works

It comes as no surprise that popular games on PC and the consoles are arriving to the mobile platform. From the icons of Battle Royale such as Fortnite & PUBG to the classic shooter experience of Call of Duty. According to several sources at Reuters, a mobile League of Legends is currently being developed.

If you don’t know what League of Legends is then you have missed out on the pioneer of the MOBA Genre. The multiplayer online battle arena was first released in 2009 for the PC and reached over 100 million monthly players by 2016. It paved the way for mobile games like Vainglory and Arena of Valor.

It appears that Tencent, the company behind Arena of Valor, and Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends, have been working on a mobile League of Legends for a year. One of three sources, under anonymity, has confirmed to Reuters this information but it seems that the game won’t likely be released this year.

This would be a strategic and profitable move by the two companies since the mobile platform has proven to be the most profitable of all gaming platforms. Tencent currently is a majority stake owner in Riot Games since 2015 and the rumors about a mobile League of Legends is not illogical. If the game does materialize, it is probably going to be released in China first since that is where Tencent’s other mobile MOBA titles made the highest earnings.
