There is no doubt that we are at the peak of mobile gaming than we ever were before. With games like Fortnite now available on mobile, things couldn’t get any better than that. If you are an iOS user then you are probably playing it. While the mobile version is quite identical to the PC & Consoles, we wanted to write a brief guide on how to get acquainted with the game from a mobile perspective.
Let’s start by introducing the game for the uninitiated among you. Developed by Epic Games, Fortnite is a Battle Royale experience where 100 players parachute onto an island, each fighting to remain the last survivor. The unique aspect about Fortnite among the titles within its genre is the feature of building. Players can build by collecting materials such as wood, stone, or metal from the environment. Building is useful for many reasons; it can be used to fortify yourself, to transport from one place to another quickly, and even can be used as a tactic during intense combat.
Currently, mobile gamers will find themselves at a disadvantage due to the control system. The ability to customise your HUD is still not available and switching from combat to building is not as smooth as it should be. However, the game is still being developed so controls are expected to be improved in upcoming updates. The good news is that there has been a development and Epic Games released an update that allows the option to add the shooting button on the right side of the screen. This makes it easier to get kills since it is the setup that mobile gamers are used to when playing shooting games.
Before parachuting, you always want to know the map and the best locations to land on and loot from. As a rule, you always want to go as far as possible from the flight path and head to locations near the edge of the map. Players are more unlikely to end up there. Some recommended locations to land on would be the Prison, Flush Factory, or the Wailing Woods. You will likely see others but it will be easy for you to hide or escape from enemies in these locations. If you see too many players parachuting in the area then move onto a nearby building away from the location and loot what you can
Furthermore, being aware of your surroundings is important. When players are walking or running nearby you will hear their footsteps and you will see an icon of the their direction. This can prepare you for a possible battle. It is important to know that you will not hear footsteps of players that are silent and careful. Moreover, we recommend that your first matches are in Squad Mode in order to have players cover your back as you experiment with controls, combat, and building.
Normally, when searching for a match you will be selected to play with mobile gamers. Cross-platform comes into effect, at least for now, only when you add a friend of yours that is on a PC which allows the Fortnite system to bring players from different platforms together.
Finally, you want to always be close to the storm circle at the start of the game since many players would want to avoid it. This will decrease the likelihood of being backstabbed by other players. Also remember to stay on the move in order to avoid being caught in the storm or you will lose health significantly the more you are inside it. You want to be inside the circle that appears on the map at all times.
Always put into consideration the time remaining for the storm’s activity and your distance from it. This way you will be able to strategize your next move wisely, whether it means gathering resources, going for kills, open crate drops, or laying low until players eliminate one another. Also, being aware of the storm’s time and distance will enable you to have a fine balance between staying on the edge away from players and far enough to not get caught inside the storm.
