In an unexpected announcement by Tencent Games during today’s livestream, the team announced that Arena of Valor will be launching in North America and South America on December 20th, 2017. While it is surprising, we speculate that this move by Tencent has been initiated due to Vainglory’s 5vs5 announcement. Both games are trying to top the other for the MOBA crown and it has become quite obvious by now. This is not necessarily a bad thing, competition paves the way for innovation and we want these fascinating games to reach their potential.
Arena of Valor, also known as Honor of Kings, is one of the most played game in the world, boasting over 200 million monthly players. The decision to launch in the Americas for iOS and Android will further expand its active users and empower its fan base. The launch will be an early Christmas present to the players in NA & SA.
When the game was first launched in China it tried to incorporate Chinese culture and historical characters into the game to appeal to the Chinese players. Their approach was very successful and is now one of the most active mobile games, if not the most.
Following its great success in the Chinese market Tencent wanted to appeal to the western market and rebranded the game from Honor of Kings to Arena of Valor. Whether it can compete with already established games like Vainglory remains to be seen. You can read more about the differences between the two games by clicking here. While both titles bring their own unique theme and experience, the two giant companies are still competing to be the #1 MOBA for mobile devices.
